Friday Favorites: Foodie Edition

The office is a bit crazy today, but I wanted to squeeze in a quick couple of favorites on this beautiful Friday. Since I'm short on time, I'm going to stick to a theme: yummy eats. I love going back and reliving delicious meals, and we've had several lately, much to the delight of my stomach and the dismay of my hips. Many of them have been healthy, but looking back I seem to have captured mostly the unhealthy ones... oh well. Rest assured that my week included lots of unpictured veggies, too.

Breakfast for dinner = always amazing. Even better with fresh bagels, super crispy bacon, and applesauce.
...And pumpkin coffee with whipped cream... I was definitely feeling some splurges this week.
Homemade macaroni and cheese... not exactly healthy, but better than a box I suppose (and much tastier).
I indulged in two of these beauties (on different nights) this week... yummmm.
Mexican night. Speaking of splurges.... sadly you can't even see the veggies that I promise were hiding in those burritos.
I know I'm a little a lot late to the overnight oats party, but I made them this week for the first time ever. My first attempt was decent, but this morning's (above) featured my signature ingredient: pumpkin. Oh. my. goodness. This is going to become a staple, for sure.
My very favorite lunch: a kebob (usually chicken, but I got lamb for a change today), rice, and cilantro-lime sauce from the incredible spot that is dangerously close to my office. Their salads are amazing too, but this rice? To die for.
Another (totally worthwhile) splurge... perfect for a hot afternoon. Also perfect for keeping me awake until 5:00 rolls around.
Sorry that you missed out on the asparagus, mushrooms, celery, and other colorful veggies that didn't make the pictures this week. Next time around I'll try to be a bit more inclusive... I just can't help it that mac & cheese just seems more photogenic than sauteed squash.
Happy weekend eating, all!

National Running Day and Race Recap: 4theWounded 5k

Yep, it's National Running Day. Yep, I celebrated by sleeping in and skipping my run this morning. Yep, I'll be making up for that by running extra tonight. Yep, I'm kind of dreading it. Yep, my legs have been hurting a lot (again) lately. Nope, I don't want to talk about it.
So instead, I'm celebrating the holiday by recapping this weekend's race, one that I'm rather glad is behind me. It was pretty brutal from start to finish, so I don't feel like reliving it in too much detail. Let's make this short and sweet, shall we?

The Good Things:
-- The weather. Perfection: cool and cloudy with just enough of a breeze to keep you from overheating.
-- The company. Dan ran this one too and most of his family walked as well. It was nice to have my hubby right there at the starting line!
-- The race details. As per usual with this racing company, everything from packet pick-up to the finish line was super well-organized, and the volunteers were excellent. I never stop at water stations during a race this short, but at mile 2 the lady holding a big cup of water towards me might as well have been an angel straight from race heaven.
-- The end. I have never been so glad to see that timing mat fly under my feet.
-- The result. Despite all the negative, I still managed to PR and hit a goal time that I am super-pleased with -- 21:37.5 also meant a sub-7:00 average pace, which makes me very happy. My 5k PR last fall was a 23:xx, about a month ago I ran a 22:xx, and I was more than ready to shave it down to a 21:xx. Although I have a feeling that from here it gets much harder to cut...
-- The post-run... run. After a little time to cool down, I had recovered enough to continue my mileage for the day. I headed over to my favorite spot and cranked out another 6 miles, which were glorious compared to those first 3.14.

The Bad Things:
-- The start. This time, I wanted to be right up front -- I got stuck battling through a huge crowd during my last 5k, and that first half-mile killed my finishing time. The first part of this race was a great downhill and I lined up 2-3 people back to take full advantage. As soon as we took off, I knew that I was pushing way too hard and if I continued to keep up with the people around me, I'd end up serving as a very dead speedbump for the 900 runners behind me. I reeled it in fairly quickly, but my first half mile still clocked in at a frightening sub 6:00 pace.
-- The hills. After that "lovely" first downhill, the next mile was basically a long, slow UPhill. By the end of mile 1, my legs were absolutely done and I was honestly unsure that I could finish the race. When the course finally leveled off around 1.5, I pulled myself together, but then hit a series of short, steep hills (run UP the hill dying, go around the cone, come flying down the other side while already looking ahead to the next steep climb). By the time I got to the blissfully flat quarter mile stretch leading back to the finish line, I was so overwhelmed that I couldn't even enjoy it. I had just a tiny kick left in me, and I certainly gave that all I had, but I was pretty focused on just staying upright long enough to stop the damn clock.
-- The mental game. Or, more specifically, the lack thereof... I think maybe it had stayed home in bed that morning. I have honestly never been so miserable during a race... I hadn't even finished the first mile before I seriously considered throwing my hands up and walking off the course. If I hadn't known so many people who were also running, I might have actually done that. I can run three miles in my sleep, but these particular three were some of the most awful miles I've ever covered... ever.

The Best Thing:
-- On the way back to my car, one of the volunteers stopped me to tell me she had seen me running. "You really have great form, you looked good out there," she told me twice during our short conversation, which was enough to keep me smiling for the rest of the day. Definitely what I needed to hear after such a tough race.

Happy National Running Day! I think we should all be greeted with cupcakes at the end of our runs today, right??

... And the Letter "C"

This weekend was brought to you by...

A hard-fought PR on a truly miserable 5k course (race recap coming soon), which resulted in... 2nd place in my division? I'd like to meet this female Matthew...

6 much more pleasant miles after the race...
A trip to my happy place...

A decent movie...

... with one very distinct exception...

A handful of catnaps...

And one poorly photographed but extremely yummy bowl of pasta.

Seasonal Nostalgia

Ugh... June. Call me crazy, but I have been longing for fall recently. As much as I love to lie by the pool or on the beach, the heat lately has been too much for me. Tuesday I tried to run after work and got seriously overheated (despite being well-hydrated), and even early this morning I was sweating buckets by the time I got back from a few short miles. I am longing for cool breezes, jeans and sweaters, crunchy leaves, and all things pumpkin (except really, who am I kidding... I ate pumpkin yesterday). I'm ready for football games, curling up under a blanket in the evening to watch movies and nap, and opening a window just to breath in that crisp, amazing fall air.
So I've been indulging myself... a pumpkin spice coffee earlier this week (enjoyed in the comfort of air conditioning, of course), my favorite fall scent yesterday (which rendered me the crazy girl who kept smelling her hands and sighing sadly), and finally, this:

fall football
perfect fall outfit
so cute and easy

pumpkin things
pumpkin seeds, pumpkin dip, pumpkin mouse, pumpkin martinis... no such thing as too much pumpkin
fall pillows
so perfect
love the little pompom, this is a a great alternative to a wreath
And the piece de resistance: chai spice cookies with pumpkin Hershey's kisses. Oh. My. Yum.

Whyyyy is it still June 1st?!

before some hot tub relaxation with this guy

Monday:
enjoyed sunshine and gentle waves on the floating dock

Friday Favorites: Toes, Trips, and (Movie) Trailers

Isn't it funny how things always go a little haywire the day before a 3 day weekend? (Answer: no. not funny at all.) After Monday's ridiculousness, things quieted down enough that I was tricked into believing we could slide gracefully into the weekend. Ha. In the past few hours, my to-do list has doubled in size, I've had almost 300 pages of "suggested reading" dropped onto my desk, and we've suddenly reached a very time-intensive wedding task: the gathering of the addresses. Now I know what I will be doing while sitting out on the dock this weekend...
Despite all that, though, it's nice to slow down for a minute and talk about the happy parts of the week. Even though it wasn't all sunshine (literally), the good managed to outweigh the bad yet again and little delights like these made it a great one.

It's been quite a while since I got caught in the rain during a run (and the last time it didn't end so well), but yesterday's 8-miler was graced with about 20 minutes of downpour. Luckily I was prepared with a plastic bag for my phone, so I was able to keep on trucking and enjoy the little shower. It was a nice distraction on what turned out to be a pretty great run... although I think my brand new shoes might disagree:
not exactly the way I was hoping to break them in...
One of my poor toenails is just hanging on for dear life. I have always been a little squeamish about feet, so I'm trying not to think about it too much. But speaking of toes...

Too many pictures of my feet for one post? I promise I'm done now.
There's nothing like a lunch-time pedicure to make you feel special (and kill any chance at productivity for the rest of the afternoon). Thankfully, the poor woman who treated my toes did a great job with the aforementioned almost-casualty... you can barely tell how sad-looking it really is. I don't typically splurge like this, but I thought it would be the perfect way to get ready for:

This pic is from my very first trip to the lake with Dan: I was 18 and we had been dating for about a year. Thankfully, my choice in swimwear has come a long way since then...
We are headed to the lake this weekend for some sunshine and a visit with Dan's wonderful grandparents. We've been trying to plan a trip down for months now, and this long weekend seemed like the perfect time to sign up the dog-sitter and pack up the car. Hurray for relatives that live in gorgeous places and are sweet enough to host us... and feed us... and drive us around in the boat!

Naps. 'Nuff said.

Despite the crazy amount of work that has converged upon my cubicle today, I am quite comfortable in the assertion that my boss is the best in the world. While my previous manager was pretty great too, I am now incredibly lucky to be working with someone closer to my age who is so laid back and good at what she does. I really don't miss the days that I dreaded coming into work.

Thought I'd end on an anticipatory note: Christmas is still a lifetime away, but this is just one of many reasons I wish it would hurry up...

Happy weekend, everyone! Have a safe and fantastic holiday!

   Love,

    Meg
